Clearing
For NCAA and NAIAi universties all student athletes are subjected to institutional compliance rules known universally as Clearing which in the USA is the responsibility of an International Eligibility Desk.
Prospective student's must register directly with the NCAA Clearinghouse whereas for the NAIA universities the Admitting institution will consult a the central body, supplying verification of academic achievements, supplying details of entry test results and completing various forms on line. Clearing can be applied for before test results are known. The registration fee for International student athletes is $85 (about £50.00). The requirement to apply directly for Clearing to NAIA institutions commences in September 2011.
The NCAA Initial Eligibility Certification Report and ID number can be supplied to a university once interest or invitation to apply has been received from the coach. In 2010 there were over 420,000 student athletes studying in NCAA institutions!
For NAIA institutions the university or college Admissions Office will take over once the Athletic Department make a formal offer. Making certain the Admission process is completed is the responsibility of the individual student. Recruiting coaches are required to validate eligibility and receive formal acceptance from their Admissions Director.
For NJCAA and other affiliated Junior College systems admission is based on proof of completion of basic secondary education in at least 5 grades without the need for entry testing or further education.
